In which Vicki talks Gothics

Reader Vicki asked if I have ever considered writing a Gothic novel. Ah, funny you should ask! The first two books I wrote were straight Gothic novels. It is a genre I LOVE, although I think it's a genre that's very easy to do badly. I grew up reading Victoria Holt, and eventually added Elizabeth Peters/Barbara Michaels, M.M. Kaye, and Mary Stewart to the mix. I do think there's a demand for them still--and loads of very commercial books have Gothic elements in them even if they don't fall completely in the genre. To me, The Dead Travel Fast is a pure Gothic. It's historical, with a heroine who leaves her comfortable and familiar surroundings for a more exotic and mysterious locale. There is peril and suspense and an ongoing mystery about whether the events that unfold are supernatural or simply the work of a malicious character. (There's even a scene in a crypt...) Much of my writing is an homage to books I've read and loved, and TDTF is no exception. It will be out in March 2010, so mark your calendars! Share this

I am so excited for The Dead

I am so excited for The Dead Travel Fast. I love a good Gothic novel - Jane Eyre is one of my favorites. It will be fantastic, I can just tell already!

So true, Vicki!Kim, they are

So true, Vicki!Kim, they are still tweaking the cover. The main elements are gorgeous, I can tell you that much! It's some background goodies they're still playing with. I am checking next week to see if I can post the back cover copy. Thanks for spreading the word, Misti!

Thanks for answering my

Thanks for answering my question Deanna. I have picked up on the gothic feel even with the Silent series, so I was hoping that meant you enjoyed the genre. I am so looking forward to The Dead Travel Fast. I have loved Gothics since I read Jane Eyre in middle school. You are absolutely right about the potential for bad writing in the genre, but oh when they are good they are so good. Is there anything better than a stormy night, a snapping fire, a cup of tea and a good gothic?

I've enjoyed your Lady Julia

I've enjoyed your Lady Julia series and look forward to TDTF. Any idea when you'll be posting an excerpt and/or the book cover? Thanks.

I'm excited for TDTF to come

I'm excited for TDTF to come out. I also love gothics. In fact, right now I am reading a Jill Tattersall gothic that I never read when I was younger. I only wish I could get a good rain storm in while I read it. But you are right...they can be done very badly sometimes. I just got another co-worker hooked on your Julia Grey books. My copies are becoming very well read. :)
