In which it is my birthday

Yes, chickens, it's my birthday! And to celebrate, I'm working. Well, I only take Sundays off when I'm writing a first draft, so no rest for the wicked. (I plan to be all frivolous after I lift my nose from the grindstone!) Anyway, I started pondering birthday treats. For me it's a dark chocolate cupcake with dark chocolate frosting--what Nigella calls black, mean, rich chocolate. And nothing is better than a cupcake for inciting festivity, don't you think? When I was a child, my birthday cakes always had the same set of circus animals at my request. I was passionately devoted to the little gray seal, although the monkeys were pretty adorable too. My mother actually still has those circus animals, and to me they always mean celebration, even if they are looking a little woeful after so many years.

But I want to know about YOUR birthday treats--what do you like best? And does it have to be the same flavor every year? And since there are very many of you, allow me to wish YOU a happy birthday, whenever it is!

Happy Belated Birthday

A few years before my retirement, I had brought a cake into the office for a police sergeant's birthday. Somehow, after we had all been served, he managed to drop the remaining cake upside down on a DeskJet printer. My absolute favorite cake!

It still makes me laugh.

Happy Birthday!! My favorite

Happy Birthday!! My favorite cake is German chocolate, two layer with a special white fluffy, like marshmallow, frosting. The frosting required a double boiler and mom only made it for birthdays. Since I don't own a double boiler it's a fond memory now. Thanks for the reminder. Enjoy your day.

Happy Birthday!

My favorite birthday cake is the rum cake my friend made for my first birthday away at college (number 19), and she had to sneak the rum into her campus apartment and hide it later, since it was a dry campus. I appreciated the effort that went into that cake, and the fact that she was willing to break the rules for me. :)

To this day, my friends still make me the birthday cake of my choice. Last year it was another rum cake, the year before it was carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. I think this year will be red velvet cake. Yummy!

birthday treat

Our son (also 21) requires a dark chocolate cake with peanut butter icing made by his aunt. She and I have the same recipe, but clearly she has the magic touch!

Off topic

Deanna, I would be most interested to know if you've ever read Michael Crichton's "The Great Train Robbery" and what you thought of it. I am rereading it now and am once again amazed at the detail of his research of 1855 London.
Happy Birthday. ( I don't even remember being that young.)

Hurrah!

Happy birthday, beautiful!!

My birthday treats are typically French fries, and I don't think that's the answer you were looking for ...

Happy Birthday!

Birthdays must have cake (favorite flavor of the birthday person) and candles. Always.

And since my son won't tell me what flavor he wants today, maybe I should just make your fav. THAT sounds like a plan. Thank you!

(actually the flavor he wants today, his 21st, is BEER, but I don't know how to make that into cake)

You should google the recipe

You should google the recipe for Beeramisu made with chocolate stout :-)

The ultimate birthday cake for me is out of an ancient cookbook - white cake with white icing topped with 3 colors of shredded coconut laid out in 6 sections. It may have been called 'carousel' cake. It just makes me happy to look at.

happy birthday!

I hope you enjoy your dark, mean, chocolate cupcake!

My favorite birthday cake is still a Carvel ice cream cake. I'm not particular about which one: Cookie Puss, Fudgie the Whale, a Little Love cake, all are great as long as they have the requisite vanilla and chocolate ice cream sandwiched together by a layer of chocolate cookie crunchies. Heaven.

Cut-out cakes

For me, it was always a cut-out cake. My dad always made my sisters and me the cake of our choice--Care Bear, Strawberry Shortcake (doll), puppy, gingerbread house, even a pack of Juicy Fruit gum. He had a little recipe book that he sometimes used, but other times he made them from a picture or just his imagination. Our cakes were famous in our extended family!

Birthday Cakes

As usual, there are stories behind my birthday cakes.

My first and favorite will always be chocolate, with chocolate frosting. However, for several years, I requested angel food cake, with strawberries and whipped cream (in January, no less), because that was something that only dad made, and it was quite a big deal. My third favorite is a raisin spice cake that is made from a recipe belonging to my grandmother.

Birthday cakes

My last birthday my sisters made me the most amazing trifle. Everything was made from scratch. It has orange zest and berries and lemon custard and fresh whipped cream. Although I love chocolate first, I may request that trifle again this year.
