In which it is almost autumn
I know I'm rushing the fences a bit here, but goodness me, I am DONE with summer. It's been busy and demanding and thorny, and I'm quite ready for a new rhythm. I want to nest, to settle my feathers and be peaceful and busy at work. I am looking forward to the view from my windows changing--not because hurricanes have blown away my trees but because the trees are putting on their autumn silks and the leaves are waving farewell.
I'm looking forward to baking things that are full of spices, scenting the air with cinnamon and nutmeg. I want crisp apples and winter squashes and porridge for breakfast. (Doesn't porridge just sound more enticing than "oatmeal"?) I want nail polish and roses in dark, dangerous colors and candles that smell of pumpkin and patchouli. I want to wear boots and scarves and wrap myself in velvets and suede. I want to shiver as I get out of bed in the morning and sleep burrowed down into the covers, hoarding my own warmth against the chill. I want to smell woodsmoke on the air and the promise of coming frosts. I want to pick up my knitting again and engage in woolly pursuits. I want to collage and sew and cook up pots of things that simmer for hours on the back of the stove. I want new bread and ancient philosophies and poetry to read aloud.
What do YOU want for autumn, chickens?

I enjoy all the things you
I enjoy all the things you do, Deanna. Plus, our entire family goes to The Woolgatherers' Fair near Montreal, at a big old house with three-shaded grounds where we can see the work of many different weavers, plus buy things made of wool. And our entire family goes apple picking in October, after which I can bake all these delicious dishes made with apples, like pie with cheddar, apple crisps, and so on. Being Neo-Pagans, we also celebrate Mabon, which is for us a dinner celebrating the arrival of Autumn. And this year, at Thanksgiving, I will be turning 70, so I may add more people to our table. And drink even greater quantities of white wine than usual.
I love autumn, and up here in Quebec, the leaves are splendid. They last until almost December--which we won't talk about yet, since winters here can be brutal. However, I have noticed that winters seem to be getting wetter and milder---perhaps one of the few good things about climate change.
SO Ready!
After a summer in Pennsylvania that included an earthquake, a hurricane, massive floods and cicada locusts, I am SO Ready for a nice peaceful autumn of beautiful leaves, crisp mornings, cool evenings, sweaters and the first fire in the woodstove. Ready for the first big pot of spaghetti sauce bubbling on the stove and putting the grill to bed for the winter. Ready to get my exercise at the gym, not by doing 4,000,000 reps of sweeping water with a broom. Ready to enjoy the newly cleaned out basement-alot of old stuff was drowned and is going-and the floors are REALLY clean down there.
Autumn can't come soon enough
I live in New England and can't wait to see the trees turn colors, hunker down in cardigans and colorful pashmina scarves, put on my boots and sip on my Chai Tea Lattes from Starbucks...
As another Florida resident,
As another Florida resident, I will take ANYTHING that smacks of fall. I want to turn off the AC, open windows, make anything that requires turning on the oven. I want to stop following the tropical weather page on weather underground. I will start pulling out my fall decorations next week, and I don't care if it's 95 in the shade. I am so over Florida summer, and this is my 35th year in south Florida. We have started planning Thanksgiving dinner, which we are having at our house this year (our son and daughter-in-law hosted their first Thanksgiving last year, but we all decided that it works better for the entire family at our home). I am ready for a trip to Yankee Candle to stock up on fall-scented candles and tarts. it may be 90 degrees, but at least it will smell like fall in my house!
autumn
Watching the Great Pumpkin, heading out to work in the dark on stormy mornings, making gumbo on saturday afternoons, Mahler, reading and a glass of my favorite scotch, walking at the river in the cold fog and silence, "Jazz impressions of Black Orpheus", baking cookies with Jack and letting him decorate (orange and red sprinkles EVERYWHERE!).
What a lovely picture of autumn you have painted!
I long for the smell of a firing tobacco barn. That sweet, woodsy fragrance reminds me of my childhood in the country and the onset of fall.
I’m looking forward to indulging in fresh apple crisp and taking my kids to our favorite pumpkin farm. Oh, the fun we have picking just the right ones for making jack o’ lanterns.
As for nail polish, my new color for fall is O.P.I.’s Just A Little Rosti At This.
Aunumn coming
wonderful reading blog on fall. Having gone to school for many years in the North I know of what you write. But here in Florida autumn means more that hopefully we turn the air conditioners off by mid October---so am looking forward to Halloween time when usually we are able to open windows and hear the sounds of the outside--children's voices and sometimes dogs barking and fresh air after being closed up for nearly six months, and nature's cool air at night and sleeping more soundly because of it.
Am looking forward to the weather change and being able to decorate out side for the holidays on sparkling afternoons that are comfortable to be in and the time change so at Christmas it will be dark by six to see all the Christmas lights. But most of all I'm looking forward to opening up my windows and sliding glass doors and letting the fresh air in and never closing them (figuratively speaking) until next May.
Added note-Disney's Animal Kingdom just had a new baby elephant i read yesterday and thought of you.
All of that sounds divine.
All of that sounds divine. Fall is my favorite season (and not just because my birthday's in Oct, although that does help). I love it when the leaves change color. I love being able to wear sweaters, without being totally frozen. I love boots beyond measure, which reminds me that I have a pair of lace up, knee-high boots that need to be taken in at the calf (but I can't find anyone near me who does that, anymore. That makes me sad. Anyway...). I love apple cider and hot chocolate. I love that Halloween will be in about a month and a half. I want to make soup, without getting an "Are you crazy look?" because it's "too hot for soup."
Well, this post? Made me happy. Yay for Fall! :-)
