In which I have no blog for you

I am sorry, dear readers. I intended to have a blog for you today, but I always write Saturday blogs on Friday, and it's Friday afternoon right now and I've spent the better part of today clearing up a minor catastrophe that I am still sorting out. The power failed briefly this morning, causing me to lose about 90 minutes' work. Yes, it ought to have been autosaved, but the autosave actually ATE two copies, and I have been trying to replicate the work from scratch. (Do I have a hard copy, I hear you asking? Why, no, no I don't. Do I have a battery-powered backup, you ask? Why, no, I don't have one of those either. Gah.) So, while I soldier on with my beloved book, I do hope you will forgive this otherwise blogless interlude. Back to work! Share this

I always back up each day's work on a flash drive and attach another copy to a draft on an email account, but I definitely need a battery back-up. If this had been new writing instead of revisions, I would be sobbing.

I would guess the most of us have to learn by experience that an uninterruptible power supply is a marvelous friend. So are flash drives. I'd have lost 3,500 pictures except for a one click backup. Feeling your pain . . .

Even a non-blog gives a fascinating insight into the world of a writer. I guess there's something to be said for sitting in a coffee shop, writing on a legal pad ala JK Rowling.

Get thyself a battery backup

Get thyself a battery backup - ASAP! I have two - one for my computer and another on my expensive drive-in worthy big screen TV. During the big winds earlier this week we had power surges that could have easily killed those devices. Being on the battery back-ups also allowed me to shut down the TV and computer properly.

That just stinks. It is one of the worst feelings in the world to see work you have poured your heart into suddenly disappear. Completely stomach-thudding. I have become obsessive about backing up-saving after every paragraph, then at the end of the day to a memory stick, several times during the day to a remote backup, then I email myself the day's output. I feel like an idiot sometimes. But I lost about a week's worth once when my computer crashed and we had to go back to start-up...everything was gone. Didn't meet that work deadline.
