In which I am on the hamster wheel

Squeeeeeeeak. That's me, trotting along on the hamster wheel. I haven't forgotten you, I promise! Okay, that's a lie. I actually forgot to blog yesterday, but that's only because it wasn't on the list. Yesterday morning my to-do list reached critical mass and I had to break it down to five separate lists and delegate like crazy. Some of it is just the usual keeping the family organized type of stuff, and some of it is work, and some of it is just straight up fabulous but detail-oriented. So, mea culpa, my dears, for forgetting to put the blog on the list! I also forgot to write down my journal and meditation, so those were neglected too. Oops!

And I'm wondering, how do you keep it together, organizationally speaking? I have two calendars that I keep by hand--one for family and personal, one for work--and a master to-do list. I never use my iphone for any of this because it just takes too long to log individual entries. Do you have a system that works? Share!

Organization

We have a calendar hanging on the wall near my computer. ALL appointments are logged on it and appointment cards are taped to the decorative page above the monthly calendar page. I have my family trained to the point that each one logs his entry and attaches his card, if any.

Before I retired (love typing that) I used a day planner. Assignments to others were logged in on the day they were assigned and deadlines were noted on the date they were due. On the week before the deadline (or even earlier), I placed a note to myself to check progress with the employee and assign assistance if it appeared the deadline might be missed. I treated my own work the same way - listing daily tasks in order of importance and carrying over to the next day (or week) those items that still needed attention. That carry-over listing was all important because nothing ever slipped through the cracks. There were no cracks.

In the kitchen, we have a pad to which any one of us can add items to be bought at the grocery/drug stores, etc. If something does not appear on the pad, and someone needs it, that's too bad. It "wasn't on the list." That phrase is now famous within our little group. Some oddments may appear on the pad which may be vetoed but they get considered and one can always lobby for them. A reasoned argument is a handy skill to master.

keeping track

I used to carry a small 5x7 ring notebook, with dividers, that had photos, swatches, measurements, important phone numbers, a calendar, business cards....it limited the purses I could carry.

now most of that is in my phone. Everything except the swatches and the business cards. I have a little holder for the cards and the swatches go in a ziplock bag.

I love the iPhone calendar, because I can set reminders. Everything goes in there-appointments, deadlines, job bookings, and fun stuff. The chime is pleasant (my son has his set to the obnoxious fog horn-I do not) and the reminder stays on the screen for a long time.
I can take photos for all but the most precise color and shape matching exercises when redecorating, and the notes capability is great-as is the recorded memo part.
I can honestly say that I USE that phone to the enth degree.

I have a calendar at home and another at school, but my best organizational tool is my husband. I've had a number of people comment on how organized I am, but it's mostly because DH is close to obsessive about it. If I tell him I'm even thinking about doing something, it will end up on his calendar. Then, all I have to do is ask him, "when am I supposed to do ___?" and he'll tell me. He's better than having a secretary!

Mobile Organization

My notorious 3" x 5" spiral bound notebook. Probably gone through a hundred of them over the past years. Easier for a man to carry, because we have more pockets. First page or two always has important phone numbers. Then each night I make a list for the next day. You can also use post-its in the book for longer range projects.
