In which I am going to Rome

No, really. ROME. I had wanted to go this October for research purposes, but earlier this month I pretty much talked myself out of it. I went all metaphysical and said, "Alright, I'm just going to shelve this trip in October unless the Universe slaps me hard upside the head and gives me some huge sign that I should go to Italy this fall."

And the next week I was invited to participate in a writers' conference. In Rome. In October. Mille grazie, Universe.

(If you haven't read Write It Down, Make It Happen by Henriette Anne Klauser, I strongly recommend it, particularly if you are in a spot where you are sitting on some unrealized dreams. I was perusing it again shortly after I booked my airline ticket to Rome, and I realized I actually did precisely what she outlines in her book. I have a list of goals at the front of my journal, and two of them pertained to Italy--one specifically to Rome. I downloaded Italian podcasts to learn a few phrases. Then I bought a guide book and told people I wanted to go. I chatted with two friends who have been within the last year and asked for their favorite places. I put it out there that I wanted to go, but when I found myself dragging my feet, I left it out there to see what happened. This has worked for me more times than I could even tell you about. My big worry now is following the Italian podcasts--one of them is taught by a charming fellow with a strong Scottish accent. I may be the only girl in Rome saying, "Arrrrrrrrivederrrrrrci!")

Congrats, beautiful!

yayyyy!

I love it when everything falls into place! I'm very excited for you!

I have a love/hate relationship with Roma. Mostly love. If you want to visit the Vatican museums, I highly recommend plunking down the extra cash and taking a tour with Dark Rome. Their guides are extremely knowledgeable, and you get to skip the massive line (although you do have to contend with the crowd once you're inside the museum). I doubt you can request someone, but if you can, Georgia from Stratford-upon-Avon was my guide, and she was fantastic.
If you're in the mood to experience other religions in Rome, the Great Synagogue tour and museum is incredible and very moving.
Also, have dinner one night in Trastevere. This neighborhood is seriously hip and popular, so you may need to make a reservation, but the food is super local and absolutely delicious and the atmosphere can't be beat.

I loved Pompeii, but you'll definitely want to spend a good part of the day there, so only plan for it if you really have the time. I'm not sure what the weather will be like in October, but it's 100% true what they say about the heat being relentless there, so be prepared. Another idea for a day trip that I really wanted to do but couldn't is Orvieto--they have underground tunnels that span almost the entire city, and you can walk them!

I hope my going into tour guide mode has helped. I'll stop now. :-)

Yay!

I have been to Rome, and it's lovely. You absolutely must see the old city of Rome and Pompeii. Pompeii is possibly the coolest thing I've ever seen in my entire life. Also, if you get a chance, take a boat to Capri. It's so pretty there. And there's pretty much amazing shopping everywhere.

When I went, I was with family who live nearby (well, a couple of hours ago--but given the speeds at which Italians drive, nearby). So, I don't remember the name of the restaurant we ate at, when we were in Rome. I don't know if you have an interest in visiting the Vatican, but you if you do, you cannot go inside with your legs showing (ie you need to wear pants) or with your shoulders exposed (no tank tops). Needless to say, I didn't go in, because it was a bajillion degrees out, and there was no way I was dressing so heavily.

Also, my advice: eat gelato everywhere. Even the gelato you buy at what amounts to an Italian 7-11 is excellent. When I was visiting, I had gelato for breakfast, sometimes--and pastries. Sweet mother of chocolate, everything was amazing.

I will try and remember the other places that might interest you. It's been a few years since I was there (2003).

Buon Viaggio!

Excellent! I will check out that book. I've been meaning to travel to Italy for ages - guess I should journal about it too.

Have a wonderful time in Rome. If you could share the name of that podcast, I would love to hear the one by the Scotsman. Thanks for the chuckle :)
