In which I am musing on gentlemen

Thanks to the Sartorialist. Scroll down to the entry titled A Graceful Man, A Gentleman. It's a lovely bit of philosophy on being a gentleman. I am a very lucky girl--I live with two extremely fine gentlemen who are very careful to show their graceful ways on a daily basis. What about up and coming gentlemen, I wonder? Are boys being taught to be gracious and thoughtful these days?

I quite agree with Sart. I love it when men are considerate and thoughtful, and am lucky to have just such a husband--of 41 years. We may both be old and gray, but now that I am retired, he arranges my setting at the table, with a pot of coffee and the newspaper, before he leaves for work, so that I just have to sit down and I'm all ready to start my breakfast. He also guides me on the street when it's icy or uneven ground, calls me from the supermarket to ask if we need anything, calls me from the video store to chat about what's available, and in general thinks of what I might want, as few men do with their wives, I fear. All this, and he also can cook and clean. Without being nagged to do it.

What a lovely thing to read! I, too, am lucky to have a husband who is amazingly thoughtful and considerate. Now that he's retired and I'm still working, the things he does for me are just way too numerous to elaborate. I only hope that I'm showing him enough appreciation.

Fortunately, our son is demonstrating that he has learned much from his father. He and his wife just celebrated their first anniversary this past Monday (they were married last year on Super Bowl Sunday!), and I see the way he treats his wife, and I am so proud. The love, care, and concern he shows for us is heart-warming, too. He's just bad about returning phone calls. Everyone has their faults.
